I won't be at CFUNITED this year, and here's why:

1) I was given an award last year for overall feedback ratings.

2) I submitted a revised ColdSpring talk this year, making adjustments based on feedback.

3) I heard not a single thing for several months - until I eventually found out that the topic was not accepted - and later heard it may have been due to lack of "Fusebox" content.

So yes, that made me kind of bitter. My original post on it may have been too harsh for some - but honestly now I just cry myself to sleep every night with my VIP tiara on ;) Regardless - hope to see you @ cfObjective!

Dave - I'm not going to CFUnited this year also, primarily due to the higher cost.

I did not know that your ColdSpring presentation was not accepted. I'm surprised by that as I attended it last year and felt it was a very good introduction that most CF Developers could grasp.

We'll miss you there, Dave. Who else is going to help us spread ridiculous stories about Joe Rinehart this year? See you at CF.Objective.... :)

I never go to any of these events unless my employer is paying. I'm not about to spend that much money when I can get the information on the web for free. Plus I can't stand that most of these conferences have "tracks". Which usually means that while I'm in one session, another session that I wanted to attend is going on. This happened to me when I went to CFUG South on year and I just told myself that it wouldn't be worth it from then on. Although it is nice to finally meet some of the people behind the blogs faces to face. I guess that's probably the real reason most people go.

jeez, I understand your frustration but you need to relax. You should have typed out that post, sat on it a day or 2 and re-read it before posting something like that.

Are we really going to criticize him for speaking his mind on his own blog? I welcome the insight, and I'll do my own "bitterness" filtering.

Of course I'm bitter - could I have made it more clear?

As for my professionalism (or lack thereof) - I'd rather let my presentations speak for themselves. What did I write here that's so provocative anyways? I didn't say anything negative about purple pants :)

Bad move on Teratech's part. Absolutely ridiculous they didn't invite back one of their top 3 speakers. Sounds like TT might be more interested in pushing "their" Fusebox framework at the expense of others? Great way to drum up more Fusebox consulting I guess...

What did Dave say that's so immature or controversial? The man's rightfully upset, for not being asked back. Dave's ColdSpring session last year was excellent, and I thought that being the number 2 highest rated speaker gave him an automatic VIP status, meaning he should have been guaranteed to be returning. I think this is a bad oversight on TT part. They are turning their back on a significantly good speaker with an incredible amount of experience to share with the community.

No matter whether people think Dave is being rational/irrational or whatever, this is seriously surprising. I sat in on that presentation last year and for the first time the "a-ah!" light went on about C.S. There were a ton of people in there and if I recall some good discussion around the podium when he was done. I will not be attending CFUnited this year either for unrelated reasons which have nothing to do with liking/disliking the conference, but I *will* be in Dave's preso at cf.Objective(), and I would have made sure to do the same had I attended CFUnited.

Here are all the reasons I won't be attending CFUNITED this year:
  1. Too expensive compared to other similar professional dev. conferences.
  2. Inconvenient location for those of us who dont live in Rockville, MD (come on...give us some variety).
  3. Trying to get out of DC on the 4th of July weekend is totally insane (took me 2 days to get home last time).
It's really too bad, because I've found the speakers and content to be very good, but until any 2 of the 3 issues above are addressed (see, I'm being reasonable), I'll be picking another event.

Um, Dave, if I'm not misinterpreting the statement "...I heard the reason was because Michael...", it appears that your ire was inflamed due to second hand knowledge? I know if I let myself get outraged everytime one of my kids "says" that another one did this or that, I'd have a lot of apologizing to do by making judgements based on that hearsay. Just wondering if you ever went straight to the horse's mouth to validate what it is you "heard"...there may be more relevant facts that would help alleviate some of the anguish and/or explain the rationale behind Michael's judgement. Just a thought.

Doug,

Good point - another reason I'm probably ticked is because I never *heard* anything - until several months after I submitted an abstract and the speakers were announced. The who's or how's I heard are irrelevant - if there's a "Fusebox-only" slant to the conference then that should be made clear up front.

This is not fair for TT. TT does not decide topics alone. There is a team who decide all submitted topics and TT has only 1 vote there. Don't forget!

And Chris and Rob will also cover some topics abot ColdSpring.

You are a good guy but as Jeff said, "be calm"!

Some company or people are actually hiring, and at some pretty good places to work, too. For instance, USAA, a solid investment and insurance firm, has openings on the job market. In like manner, there may be hope yet for workers that are looking to get back into the job market and not be in a job where they have to worry about getting a payday loan all the time. Granted, they're streamlining their offices, and closing a few, but spreading the workers at those closed shops to their other ones. A few of those people moving to the new offices will no doubt want a payday loan to offset the move. If you're one of the lucky folks to get one of the jobs that USAA has available, the wages are high enough that you may not have to worry so much about getting a payday loan.

Today was rice day, fifty-pound sacks of white rice in trucks bearing an elephant logo. The same happy elephant appeared on the bags, its head raised to the sky, the trunk curved like an S.

     "Elephant," Todd said.

He said it because a laborer was staring at it intently. Which meant he wasn't working.

"That's right," the man said. "I couldn't remember the word."

He was the only other human at the loading dock this morning. The man didn't have a name, just a number, like the rest of the robots. Paris, at Night.
